This 2.5-acre pond, located within Jalandhar’s newly incorporated municipal limits near the origin of the Kala Sanghian drain, faces severe challenges of encroachment, industrial effluent, sewage inflow, and lack of public amenities. Despite these pressures, it holds high potential for ecological and social transformation.
The restoration strategy emphasizes low-energy, nature-based solutions such as phytoremediation and bioremediation to improve water quality and biodiversity. Planned interventions include aeration and biological augmentation, floating wetlands made from reclaimed materials, chemical-free wastewater treatment, natural bank stabilization, and riparian planting with native vegetation.
Equally central to the process has been listening to community needs. The design integrates everyday public uses with ecological function: shaded seating around the treatment plant, a children’s play area, jogging track, non-motorized boating, toilets, and species interaction decks. The restored pond thus becomes both a functioning ecosystem and a vibrant shared public space.
